Senior Art Exhibit - Art Event

On Friday, December 8th, I went to the "Meraki" senior photography exhibit in the Julio Fine Arts Gallery. It was refreshing to look at a new form of art, other than paintings, and it was also interesting to see the talent of fellow students. I left incredibly impressed.

The two displays that I found to be the most intriguing were coincidentally very similar to the other.

Lula by Katelyn Hegarty

The colors used in Lula were eye catching. The set up made sense and the analogous scheme was apparent. Reds/pinks were placed next to each other, as were the yellows and blues. It was very organized and clearly done thoughtfully. I also thought the three-dimensional outline around each woman added complimenting dimension to a 2D piece. Flower petals were used to  outline each pictured girl. The petals really made the piece encompass an overall feminine, gentle, and pretty feel. Finally, the positioning/pose of the pictured girl was also clever. The four photos on the outside corners were all facing in towards the two center pictures who were facing straight.

Essence by Rachel Kingsley

Although Essence has a similar set up to that of Lula, each display and pictures were still so different. I thought that the use of a plain black background was very effective. It allowed the people as well as the colored and white powder to pop. If I were to ask the artist/photographer one question, it would be whether or not the colors and amount of powder, even the pose of the model, meant something. I also think the fact that the models appear naked brings a sense of vulnerability to the piece. The main focus is truly the colors.

I really do like looking at professionally photographed pictures as well as going to exhibits that showcase photography. The one major aspect of paintings that I do like, however, is how easy they are to interpret and piece together in order to gain the entire underlying meaning of the art. Of course I am speaking from my very minimal knowledge of photography, but it seems as if, unless there is a written explanation of exactly what the artist was going for, there is a lot of room for interpretation and debate.
